Of the new rapid grocery delivery firms that have emerged since 2020, many have opted for employing their riders or providing permanent contracts rather than the gig economy model that has been so pervasive in delivery services. MORE FOR YOU Menolascina said Gopuff will be bringing all its riders under one system that is a "more consistent model" but said Gopuff had no timeline in place for these changes. It marks just one of the challenges a company like Gopuff faces when it enters a new market via an acquisition of company that already exists in that market. Menolascina co-founded Dija in early 2021 and raised $20 million from Index Ventures, Blossom Capital and others. Less than a year into operations, Gopuff acquired Dija , marking a very quick exit for the start-up. It also marked one of a number of acquisitions of late in the quickly evolving delivery space, which is consolidating at a fast pace . "It's been even more complex because we were actually three different companies. There was Gopuff, there was Dija and there was Fancy," Menolascina said about the acquisitions. "I would say that one relief has been not having any meaningful overlap between Fancy and Dija. While Dija has been previously launching locations in London, Fancy has been looking after the UK regions, so that made things to a certain extent easier." Currently, Gopuff is active in 35 locations in 20 cities with seven more locations due to come on track in the coming weeks. "We felt immediately that there was chemistry and that there was an aligned strategy," Menolascina said of his meetings with Gopuff during the buyout. "We were looking at the industry with the same lens." The rapid grocery delivery market is fiercely competitive especially in the UK with big and small players. This is mirrored elsewhere in Europe where Gopuff is eyeing up more business. This week it launched in France, joining its operations in Spain. Follow me on Twitter .
