They may assume that leaders are born, not made. But our brains' intricate web of wiring helps us learn, develop and grow in many areas, including personality traits and qualities, skills and behaviors. In fact, neuroscience demonstrates we can create new neural pathways to form new patterns of behavior. As a result, being open to constant learning, change and growth can only benefit our leadership practice. 4 Ways To Constantly Learn Leadership is a learnable skill and an iterative process that builds on prior learning and experience. Good leaders are always learning, adapting to circumstances and furthering their learning in the process. That’s why I advocate being a leader-learner. So how do you learn in order to lead? MORE FOR YOU 1. Have a learning mindset. Those who appreciate that growth and development are possible have a learning or growth mindset. They understand that anything can be learned and that learning is a process of change. Some leaders believe they have nothing more to learn or that they already know the right way to do something. This mindset blocks opportunities for both them and their teams to grow. Being open to possibilities, ideas and new learnings is important for creativity and innovation. Adopting new thinking reinvigorates you, your leadership and your organization. Ask yourself: "What can I learn? What should I learn? What do I want to learn?" 2. Cultivate curiosity. Constant curiosity makes learning simply part of you and your way of being. If you're motivated and hungry to improve your skills and knowledge, you'll learn more successfully. Professor and researcher Francesca Gino wrote , “When our curiosity is triggered, we think more deeply and rationally about decisions and come up with more-creative solutions.” Additionally, developing and demonstrating a genuine interest in people and their perspectives and interests enriches all your relationships. Start by asking yourself what you're curious about, then think about all the topics that extend from that. If this still feels hard, set an intention to ask one other-oriented question per meeting or interaction. 3. Find your way of learning. We all consume and digest information and learning differently. Think about how you prefer to learn in given contexts. For example, do you like to just go for it? Do you like talking to other leaders, coaches or mentors? Maybe you like podcasts or reading books and articles. Discover what works best for your learning. It's also important to try other ways of learning. After all, your direct reports might have different learning preferences that could help you grow and develop. If you only stay within your comfort zone, you won’t have exposure to new experiences. So challenge yourself. Remember that learning something new often feels uncomfortable and awkward. For example, think about your first driving lesson and how easy it is now. Accept the discomfort, and embrace new learning. 4. Practice by trial and learn by error. Being good at something takes practice. Experimentation is the basis of our entire body of scientific knowledge. Most processes, products and services have been developed and improved upon through experiential learning. Problem-solving by trial and error is an effective tool for individual, team and organizational learning and performance. Commit to a regular schedule of learning and practicing. Make it a daily routine so it becomes part of your muscle memory and your systems of habits that support you. Moreover, don’t be fearful of making errors. When it comes to leadership—or anything—we can learn from mistakes by adapting and doing things differently next time. Try asking yourself what your best failure was and what you learned from it. Leadership involves continuous development and improvement. Being a leader-learner means embracing possibilities for change. By getting comfortable with discomfort and perceived failure, you will try things that help you improve and succeed. With this mindset, you'll find that the more you learn, the better you will lead.
