But lawyers consulted by the company said the procedure is permissible under California law, which authorizes physician-assisted suicide in cases of terminal illness. This is an important point not only to avoid criminal charges but also because the brain preservation process needs to start immediately after death to work. When the patient dies – or decides to die – Nectome uses a machine to replace the patient’s blood with a set of chemical embalming fluids. “You can think of what we do as a form of embalming that preserves not only the externals but also the internals,” says McIntyre. The fluids are associated with cryogenic techniques (sustaining life at low temperatures) in a process called “aldehyde-stabilized cryopreservation” to preserve as much of the patient’s organs as possible. In addition to the pig that won the company co-founder an award, the procedure has also been tested on the corpse of a recently deceased woman that McIntyre and his partner Michael McCanna purchased from a Portland science body donation company. Fineas Lupeiu, the founder of the company that sold them the body, has not disclosed the woman’s age or cause of death – nor the price he charged for the corpse. Ken Hayworth, the president of the Brain Preservation Foundation, believes Nectome’s technique is valid. Even if the person dies, brain preservation could eventually bring them back to life, he says. “It’s like your computer is turned off – that doesn’t mean the information isn’t on it,” he says. The key to the procedure’s success, Hayworth believes, would be making a map of the connectome – the part of the brain that maps the connection between neurons. It would be an incredibly complex and currently impossible process, but one that could eventually become a reality. Hayworth is only concerned that the company will start selling its product before “the ethical and medical community can have a full discussion” about it. “It might seem like you’re encouraging someone to kill themselves to preserve their brains,” he says.
