To date, Xocean has received €16m in backing. That includes about €8m last year from investors including VentureWave Capital’s Impact Ireland fund, that’s backed by the likes of Bono and Liam Neeson. It gave Xocean a post-raise valuation of more than €100m. Ives has been rapidly expanding the company’s headcount as it signs up new clients. It now has 120 employees compared to 41 last year. It intends to add 100 more within the next six months and have 350 within another 18 months. The firm plans to triple the number of unmanned vessels in its fleet to 60. For Ives, Xocean has been the start-up that he had probably hoped the previous venture he headed, OpenHydro, would be. He headed that tidal energy firm – which had also been based at Greenore - from 2004 until 2016. The company attracted millions of euro in funding, and eventually France’s Naval Energies became the biggest shareholder. But OpenHydro failed to live up to expectations and spectacularly collapsed in 2018 under a €280m debt pile. Ives had left before that, having already spotted the potential for unmanned surface vessels. Some of the key staff members from OpenHydro now work at Xocean. Ireland has the opportunity to be a major hub for offshore wind “I said that I was going to take six months off, having been at OpenHydro for over a decade,” recalls Ives. “But I started Xocean six weeks later. “You get experience from everything you do in life,” he says. “The experience of a decade at OpenHydro really helped to frame my understanding of how to build a business and how to scale a business.” A number of major energy companies are currently planning major offshore wind projects all around Ireland’s coast amid the push to decarbonise the economy and create energy security. The projects include vast offshore wind schemes that they’re hoping to bring on stream in coming years. They could result in Ireland eventually being a net energy exporter and self-sufficient at a time when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has underscored how geopolitical events can have significant impacts on consumers all over the world. It presents a major opportunity for Xocean too. Ives thinks that the country could and should aim to be a global leader in renewable energy technology. “Ireland has the opportunity to be a major hub for offshore wind, not only supplying renewable energy for its own needs, but also for export,” he says. “Offshore wind is presenting two opportunities: the local one, but also the opportunity for Irish companies to export their skills to support an international market,” according to Ives.
