The company's senior executives have described the fines as "crazy". Uber has since become the largest ride-sharing operator in the country. A Roy Morgan study released in February found 93 per cent of riders who had used a ride-share service in a three month period had used Uber, while only two per cent had used GoCatch. Uber's smaller rival had been a significant player in the industry until recently, raising $1.2 million in 2018 as part of an attempt to list on the Australian Securities Exchange. Plaintiff lawfirm Maurice Blackburn has also indicated it will pursue a class action against Uber on behalf of licensed taxi drivers and hire-care operators who lost income because of its UberX service. Last April, GoCatch said it was considering launching legal action against Uber after the ABC's Four Corners program reported the American company was using software called Surfcam to see where its competitors' cars were and approach drivers in an attempt to lure them away. GoCatch chief executive Andrew Campbell did not respond to a request for comment. Last year, however, he said it was "appalling" that Uber had "used hacking technologies to steal our data and our drivers". "I think our investors would be very angry to learn that Uber's been allowed to get away this sort of behaviour that has no doubt had an impact on their investment," he said. But documents lodged with the court on March 31 also include allegations that Uber used a software called Greyball starting in 2014 to identify and deny rides to users suspected of "being transport compliance or regulatory enforcement officers" and "assisting UberX [drivers] to evade ... transport compliance officers".
