Meanwhile, Seven West Media finalised a deal to buy its regional television partner Prime Media Group for $132 million following a two-year fight between some of the country’s most powerful media figures. A tie-up between Seven, which is primarily a free-to-air television business, and HT&E is logical. The acquisition of regional broadcasters in their respective markets gives them greater scale and an ability to sell advertising nationally. Combining two kinds of media - audio and video - would increase scale and provide new opportunities for advertisers. But any kind of deal is complicated by the highly influential figures involved with both companies. Seven West Media is controlled by billionaire Kerry Stokes, while HT&E’s second largest shareholder is News Corporation, owned by the Murdoch family. HT&E is chaired by businessman Hamish McLennan, who runs three other boards, while Mr Stokes leads Seven West Media. Industry and banking sources said while there is appetite to do a deal, it will only take place if Seven’s valuation increases. Seven shares have climbed 11 per cent since January, closing on Friday at 69 cents per share. HT&E shares sit at $1.90. Shares in Seven have continued to climb as it secured a more favourable deal with banking lenders and achieved record-breaking television ratings thanks to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Advertisement
