But it turns out the volume of office swearing last year was nearly triple that of 2008, when markets everywhere crashed and unemployment soared. All the F-bombs bursting in air these days says a lot about how society has changed. There aren’t TV network censors anymore to shield us from the seven forbidden words because social networks replaced them. When people work in their slippers instead of Cole Haans, their tongues loosen. “Business formality is on the way out,” a Sentieo executive explained when The Wall Street Journal looked into 2021’s bumper crop of workplace cussing. As a service to readers, I reviewed conference-call transcripts to gauge the effectiveness of CEO swearing. As we all know, for swearing to stick with the listener it must have either shock or humor value or both. I’m sad to say the CEOs are dismal failures. Humor and shock don’t really fit in the conference-call genre, so the swearing comes off as boorish and ill-considered. For instance, when the CEO of Centennial Bank, a lender with branches in Manhattan, was asked about the impact of rising interest rates, he grumbled about “how much [expletive] do we take.” And then there’s the CEO of European airline Ryanair complaining about London’s main airport by saying, “I have no time for the [expletive] [expletive] that comes out of Heathrow.” Now that they’re swearing more, it’s incumbent on business leaders to swear better. Leading by example is what they’re paid to do, after all. Happily, no consultants need to be consulted, no power points pointed to in order to do better. Business leaders, whoever you may be, for the good of your company this week you are directed to watch Blazing Saddles or The Jerk. Watch and learn swearing from the masters. The week ahead Jan. 17 Signature Bank reports earnings. This small-business lender was one of the few banks to serve the cryptocurrency community and is paying the price for that now, with billions of dollars in deposits heading out the door. Metropolitan Commercial Bank, which recently said it would withdraw from the crypto world, reports earnings on Friday. Jan. 18 The City Council holds a hearing on the proliferation of unlicensed smoke shops across the city. Experts reckon there are more than 1,000 stores illegally selling cannabis , and authorities are trying to crack down as licensed operators begin to open. Jan. 19 M&T Bank reports earnings. This lender has historically been one of banking’s best performers, but the stock has gotten hit hard recently amid concerns over slowing growth. A new president and CFO will soon be in place.
