The only thing that can stop that motion, however, is fear. Fear locks us into indecision. It hampers our desire to try. When we let fear control us, we imagine the myriad things that could go wrong in our attempts. Curiosity, however, opens us up to surprise and possibility. Curiosity is the playground of discovery. Practically every great invention that has advanced the cause of mankind is the product of curiosity—the result of restless thinkers who were not afraid to try and try again. And that curiosity isn’t just for those great innovators. It lives deep inside each of us and is coded into our DNA. Curiosity—An Innate Impulse We were all born with an impulse to seek knowledge and discover new things. A study conducted by cognitive psychologists at Johns Hopkins University shows that when infants are surprised by an object, they learn more about it. Their capacity for surprise keeps them curious. In this childlike wonder, children build their Knowledge Capital quickly to prepare them for the new world they are experiencing. When their ideas turn out to be wrong, they don’t let fear of failure paralyze them. They simply revise their thinking and test out another hypothesis. Our sense of surprise and curiosity are vital tools that help us accomplish our goals. It’s fear that keeps us from those goals. Think about it: why would you permit yourself to be afraid of what you do not know? You have not tried. You have not produced any result—positive or negative. All you have is your imagination in a world where optimism is free and enthusiasm costs nothing. To allow fear to take hold of you is to be imprisoned by what should otherwise set you free: your mind. You may very well have failed in previous endeavors but not the one you are intending to embark upon now. What are you curious about? What attempts are you making? How are you evaluating the results of those attempts? And what Knowledge Capital are you building through your failures? Others may have failed in pursuing their goals, but they are not you.
