Photo modified by Ukraine International Legion In a farewell letter to his parents on the occasion of his death, Porter said he’d prefer to be buried in Ukraine, where he’d expressed no regrets in possibly making the ultimate sacrifice. “You both know deep down I was always unable to block out the suffering of the others around me and I was always going to involve myself in an enterprise such as this,” he wrote. “I can only hope my sacrifice makes the world a better place and that the people of Ukraine keep my memory alive and the memory of my comrades.” But he said he hopes any Calgary memorial service for him — with or without his remains — would be held at the city’s Mewata Armoury with the help of one-time comrades alongside the 1st Field Ambulance or 41 Brigade Group. Recommended from Editorial Article content Hughes, who’s seen much of the war’s devastation and some of its active fighting since March 2022, said the two Canadians’ deaths is another jarring chapter among many. “There’s too many dead, too much death,” said the 60-year-old. The war has become increasingly costly to those who have served alongside Porter and Zelenco, said their commander, who’s attended several funerals recently for fallen comrades. “For three months (last year), we had no killed in action or even wounded,” said The Dentist, who recalled being wounded three times since October. “My unit has been decimated . . . (Bakhmut) is a meat-grinder.” But those ranks, he said, will soon be replenished with dozens of his one-time Sri Lankan military colleagues and those from other countries. Hughes said the military volunteers Zelenco and Porter left behind told him they need donors to help them procure more equipment to enable more of them to survive and effectively fight the Russians. “They need drones (for reconnaissance) badly — they’re going into bad situations without them,” he said.
